Recreational cannabis sales in Maine reach record high in 2024, but are beginning to mellow out
Maine set another record for recreational cannabis sales in 2024.
Maine's legal marijuana stores sold more cannabis than ever before in 2024, reaching $244 million in sales. That's 12% more than in 2023.
John Hudak, who runs Maine's Office of Cannabis Policy, explains that while sales are still growing, they're not growing as fast as they used to. This is normal - every state that has made cannabis legal has seen the same pattern. But Maine is doing better than other states did at this point after making cannabis legal.
The price of cannabis also went down in 2024. One gram costs 7% less than it did in 2023. This is partly because Maine's cannabis growers are producing more than people are buying. While lower prices are good for customers, it's hard for businesses because their costs (like electricity and workers) keep going up.
